Lasted Gore-Tex Construction: Lowa's Lasted Gore-Tex Construction - so special, it's patented. We use a proprietary lasted method to allow for a smooth and seamless Gore-Tex lining which reduces hot spots. Gore-Tex laminate is stitched to the upper at the cuff, then attached to the insole and the bottom is sealed with Gore-Tex tape to provide a waterproof gasket at the insole of the boot. Lowa Design DNA: Climate Control System: This moisture management system keeps feet dry, protecting you against blisters and hot sports. A series of perforations or holes inside the boot's cuff lining allows air to enter the boot lining while the walking movements "pumps" heat and moisture back out through the holes. Moisture is pulled away from the foot, evaporating while you walk. Lowa Boots has utilized a new injection molding technique that's intended to shave weight from the light hikers currently in its line without diminishing the support those light hikers have long been recognized for. With the new AL-X series, Lowa injects polyurethane and other polymers into a mold to create a single, continuous piece of material that not only serves as the midsole, but also wraps over the upper portion of the shoe. This "Mono Wrap" material on the upper does triple duty, providing torsional rigidity and protection for the sides of the shoe while also covering as a rigid heel counter and a protective rand for the toe.

One goal of the technology is to reduce the amount of materials and layers needed to form the midsole and upper, and the shoe succeeds in this regard. But does it shave that much weight? Well, a pair of men's size 9 shoes is 2.4 pounds per pair--definitely not a big difference from other low-cut hikers on the market, but the weight is right in line with other shoes offering good support in a relatively lightweight package. Also, the AL-X 66 has a trim profile and feels pretty nimble on the trail.

One of our chief concerns was whether the midsole material would peel away from the split-grain leather on the upper. But we wore the AL-X on a number of pretty serious day hikes over scree and rocky terrain, and it proved plenty durable. Plus, the Mono-Wrap material was a good shield as we banged and scraped our way down a rocky descent or two. Though our shoes appear slightly scuffed, we couldn't easily grind away material or gouge it.

...As for stability, the shoe has a well-shaped heel cup and our tester's feet stayed seated securely, plus the Mono-Wrap material surrounding the heel added definite stability. Also, a nylon shank adds some necessary stiffness.

...One thing the AL-X line will certainly do is attract customer. The Mono-Wrap construction lends it a unique look that should stand out on the shelves. For the vast majority of consumers hiking a few miles on established trails, the AL-X series should be pretty popular. After a rigorous and multi-part testing procedure, LOWA Sportschuhe Gmbh, parent company of LOWA Boots in the U.S., has been awarded ISO 9001 status, a highly prestigious certificate of quality for the development, production, and sales of their outdoor, military, and safety footwear worldwide. The announcement was made by Peter Sachs, General Manager of LOWA Boots LLC in the U.S. LOWA is the only outdoor boot supplier to have achieved this recognition. The status is only awarded after a rigorous and multi-part audit conducted by the PFI providing indisputable evidence that the quality management systems fulfill the requirements of the stringent DIN EN ISO 9001:2000 standards. PFI (The Test and Research Institute Pirmasens) is an internationally acknowledged service and research center and one of the few institutes allowed to certify for ISO 9001 status. There is a 75 page manual of compliance that comes with the certificate. The certificate has to be renewed every three years; and in the interim, there are strict requirements and instructions regarding the procedural, production, and testing documentation that must be continually kept up to date.

Great Hiking Shoe! March 7, 2008
Reviewer: Rebecca Heaton from Rocky Mountain Sports Editor
"I played around on some bigger boulders and felt that I could wear these shoes for some easy climbing/bouldering because of the feel of contact to the ground.  Under the heel, the sole felt extremely solid...the AL-X shoe design was very nice, sleek, could even dress them up a bit for a casual dinner after a hike."
