We Understand The Need For Portable Lighting
We Pioneered The Flashlight
Which came first? The battery or the flashlight?
At Energizer, the history of flashlights and batteries is one and the same. That's because the foundation of portable power - the battery - found its most popular use in operating another device invented shortly after the battery - the handheld flashlight.
Energizer's leadership in the portable lighting industry spans over 110 incredible years. It started in 1898 when a Russian immigrant, Conrad Hubert, lit up New York City with the introduction of the newly patented electric hand torch or flashlight. Soon afterward, Hubert began manufacturing flashlights, batteries and light bulbs under the name "Ever Ready". Hubert's first portable flashlights were handmade using a dry cell battery, bulb and rough brass reflector inside a paper tube. Hubert first put this flashlights in the hands of New York City policemen, resulting in high visibility and nearly instantaneous success for his product.
Thus began innovative flashlight design and construction at Eveready Battery Company to meet portable lighting challenges for almost any need. Emerging bulb and battery technology helped Hubert move forward in flashlight development. Over the years, Eveready's technology team introduced the tungsten bulb, made numerous switch improvements and developed spotlights to project light forward. Changes in case construction, lenses and endcaps all kept Eveready at the forefront of the portable lighting industry as well. And Eveready's early focusing flashlights proved both popular and useful for outdoorsmen, engineers, construction workers, policemen and miners.
Energizer's commitment to flashlight and battery technology took a substantial step forward in 1982 with the opening of our Westlake, Ohio, research and development center, one of the industry's largest. Since that time, we have developed brighter lights, extended run times, engineered rugged housings, advanced battery performance and increased functionality of lights for the many and varied demands of today's users. The name Eveready Battery Company officially changed to Energizer Holdings, Inc. (as we are known today) in April 2000.
Innovative and dependable portable lighting - it's been our business and our passion for over 110 years.
