Massif Mountain Gear Company
Massif® Mountain Gear Company is a world leader in supplying flame-resistant, high performance outdoor apparel to the military, law enforcement, search and rescue professionals, and the wildland firefighting community. Over the past decade, Massif has revolutionized the look and feel of flame-resistant clothing with innovative fabrics and forward-thinking designs, offering a new generation of high-end gear that provides protection without sacrificing comfort or performance.
Massif works closely with the Army, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard to develop new fabrics and garments specific to the needs of those serving in the military. To date, Massif has provided hundreds of thousands of aviators, ground troops, special operations forces, and other military personnel with the world's most advanced hot and cold weather flame-resistant clothing. Massif garments and fabrics are made in the U.S.A. and are currently worn by ground troops, special forces, aviators and other military personnel based in Iraq, Afghanistan and other parts of the world.
Massif Mountain Gear Company was founded by Rogue Valley locals Randy Benham (Chief Designer) and Jeff Roberts (CEO) in 1999. Randy and Jeff first met as climbing partners and have spent time in some of the world's toughest alpine environments. Jeff Roberts explains, "Randy and I know first hand what it means to depend on the clothing you wear to protect your life and the lives of others. We both wanted to develop a line of outdoor clothing that better serves the needs of rescue professionals, firefighters, law enforcement, and military personnel."
Randy worked as a search and rescue professional for over 20 years with the National Park Service in Crater Lake and Grand Teton National Parks. He has received multiple honors for saving lives in complex search and rescue situations, as well as for his innovative design of rescue equipment and clothing. Jeff is an experienced climber and alpinist with a background in the operational management and oversight of small and large companies. Randy and Jeff's vision for Massif grew out of these experiences and evolved into an emphasis on developing the most advanced flame-resistant fabrics and garments available in the world today.
Over the past decade, Massif has grown from a small company with a staff of four into the recognized leader in the development of flame-resistant fabrics and apparel. Executive Vice President Chris Wasgatt joined the company in 2000 and oversees all government programs, customer service, and new business development. Chief Operating Officer Jeff Bowman joined Massif in 2007 and brings over three decades of executive experience with the country's leading fabric and garment suppliers for the outdoor apparel industry. Other Massif employees have real-world experience in the field as search and rescue professionals, wildland firefighters and outdoor professionals.
Massif Mountain Gear Company makes the finest fire-resistant technical outdoor gear in the world. Period. We continually search the globe for the newest and best fabrics and manufacturing techniques to maintain our commitment to excellence.
Massif gear is field tested by the most hardened professionals and in the harshest conditions imaginable so that your gear performs when you need it to.
All Massif gear is manufactured in North America either in our shop or by top-level certified facilities. All fabric and craftsmanship is continually evaluated to insure consistently high performance.
Massif is a family owned and operated company based in Ashland, Oregon.
A note from Tandy Benham Founder and Chief Designer:
Dear At-Risk Professional:
Like many of you, I am a search-and-rescue professional. Over the past several years, as a member of the Grand Teton National Park Rescue Team, the Jenny Lake Rangers, I've participated in hundreds of rescue missions and fought countless backcountry fires.
While on those missions, I was constantly reminded of how impractical my equipment was especially in terms of weight, durability, comfort, and practical features.
So out of necessity, as well as frustration, I started to design and build custom equipment and clothing for myself and the other Jenny Lake Rangers. (Before becoming a member of the JLR, I made custom outerwear and climbing equipment for over 15 years. I've outfitted individuals, as well as entire teams, for ascents on four of the world's five tallest peaks - including Everest.)
Soon, word spread about the functionality and practicality of the equipment I was making. What started out as a personal effort to improve the gear that my fellow rescue rangers and I had to contend with turned into more work than I could handle in my spare time.
So I formed Massif Mountain Gear Company to help build and distribute my specialized gear to rescue professionals, fire teams, ski patrols, EMTs, the military, and private industry.
Massif professional outdoor and backcountry gear is unlike anything else: Every single item has been specifically conceived, designed, engineered, and optimized to be the best.
I know how important it is for gear to be comfortable and functional in extreme conditions and not to fail in the field. That's why I've used - without exception - the finest possible designs, materials, and construction methods.
Please take a moment to look through this site and examine our innovative backcountry gear that has evolved over nearly two decades of unforgiving real-world use (and with the benefit of continual professional feedback). I promise you that it will be the finest, most dependable, most functional (and best-looking) gear you'll ever use. And if you have any questions, just call the office and we'll be glad to answer them personally.
